Marc Mondavi’s cowboy boots crunched the dry soil covering Chip and Jane Young’s Northern California hillside property as he quickly walked downhill toward one of their water wells. The Youngs and their golden retrievers matched every step he took, following Mondavi as he in turn followed the copper, L-shaped rods that extended from his hands. He spoke quietly to the rods, asking questions, murmuring numbers, and stopping periodically when they would swing across each other or dart in one direction. Every once in a while Chip would crack a joke that attempted to cut the silence.
